Thumbs up How to upgrade Samsung Galaxy Spica GT i5700 mobile phone to Eclair 2.1

I own a Samsung GT i5700 mobile phone based on Android platform. The mobile looks good, pretty nice features but most of all, its powered by android. The firmware and baseband version that was featured in the phone was CUPCAKE 1.5. I was using android for the first time so was pretty excited about its functioning, but when a friend of mine made me aware about the latest and hot firmware version ECLAIR 2.1 from android, i was curious to see it soon working in my phone. Making some efforts to learn about the stuff and finally i got to know how to do it. And it works good. So decided to share about the same to android fans owning gt5700.

There are no official firmware releases out, perhaps, few of the nations are fortunate enough to have it official. But most of us have to do it ourselves and in a beta way.

Note: Before approaching to my guide please decide sure if you really want to do it or not, if you cancel out the process in between, it can make your cell turn into a brick. But personally i think every man on this earth can process the steps with the exception of dumb people!

    The Stuff You Will Require:
1: The firmware : - Ofcourse the Eclair, but the baseband version may vary as per the continent that spheres your nation. (Contact me if you want to know about the baseband from your country)
The most common one is I570EDDJB2. Dowload it here.
2: Multi Downloader Application : - It's a simple application that creates an interface between user and mobile(pc/sp).
ODIN is the most common in this category and download it here if you done have 1.
3: Spica Operating System: Some characteristics still belong to mobile phones even if its powered with android and that is operating system which makes the firmware work for you. Download spica jc3 OS.
4: You will also require drivers for your mobile usb cable. They are already accompanied in a cd rom with mobile but if you dont have, download it here.

    STEPS TO FOLLOW BEFORE UPDATING:
Hard Reset you mobile phone at first by entering *2767*3855# in dial-pad. This is not a necessary step to do but recommended for safe and proper installation of new firmware.
Detach all those connections and attachments that can interfere in the process. Like, remove the sim card from mobiles, any usb connectivity from computer.

Now lets take a look on steps to follow for flashing your samsung gt i5700 to ECALIR 2.1:

The firmware comes either as a bunch of separate files like bootloader, phone, pda or as a single file under .tar extension. The difference in the way of application of the kinds of packages can be understood in step 5. But i will take in reference the package whose link i have submitted above i.e. with a bunch a separate files.

1: Extract the contents of downloaded firmware into a folder. Move the ODIN multi downloader and spica OS to the same folder.

2: Remove SD card from your Spica, shutdown the device and now restart the mobile by holding Volume Down + Camera + Power button altogether so as to boot in download mode.

3: Connect your spica with your computer with the help of usb cable. (make sure the drivers are already installed). You can verify the connection in device manager under MODEMS and UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS tabs.

4: Now run ODIN application. It should show a COM port number in a background of yellow. If yellow background is not there, there is definitely some thing wrong with driver installation or connectivity procedure.

5: Match the names in firmware extract folder files with the textbox labels in ODIN and insert the file location in the box. Here the advanced option should be left intact whereas incase of one package installation, you should check the box 'one package' under options.

6: So finally you are ready to upgrade your Spica firmware; let the mobile rest at some place on desk with USB cable connected and hit the START button on ODIN.

7: The process will finish in about 2 to 3 minutes but the clock on ODIN keeps ticking. So better watch for the message "close serial port and wait until rebooting". This is the instant when your mobile's upgrade is over and the phone will reboot.

Let the phone reboot and detach the USB cable from mobile.
Now your Samsung Galaxy Spica GT i5700 will boot in ECLAIR!
    ENJOY!

Any issues regarding the upgrade or firmware or even ECLAIR thereafter, you are welcomed to contact me!

    sure buddy!
few questions before i can tell u what to do!
could you see yellow background behind port number?
were your rest of the USB ports free of any device?
if the process is not getting over step <1> that means device is not connected yet properly! so you should also give a check to driver installation!

then let me know for further assistance!

    hi!
just give two to three tries to USB connectivity. i mean just unplug the cable and then plug again. but remember to switch to download mode at first in mobile device.
one more que.....do you have any tethering software installed on your computer, like Pdanet or easytether? if yes, then uninstall it first from your computer. that should be the reason.

    regards

Indeed I have pdanet installed. I will remove it and give it an other shot. Another question: my current baseband version is i5700XXIJ5. Will my Spica still work if I replace it with your I570EDDJB2? I mean, the numbers are completely different...
